Activists and the affected said current demolitions are part of preparations for the Group of Twenty (G20) Summit that the capital city of New Delhi is preparing to host in September. Past G20 summits had been met with protests from both anti-globalization movements and groups opposing the displacement of society’s poorest to make way for a summit venue. On March 24, Randall Robinson died at the age of 81. Robinson became a household name after the U.S.-based organization he founded in 1977, TransAfrica, spearheaded public protests against South African apartheid in front of the South African embassies in the early 1980s, helping to give voice to the international anti-apartheid movement. Dozens of Bronx public school parents, teachers, students and community activists gathered on March 20, the 20th anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq, to oppose a military recruitment fair, hosted by U.S. House Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) and Adriano Espaillat, at Renaissance High School in the Bronx. The grassroots Bronx Anti-War Coalition organized the demonstration. Workers World newspaper reports.
This month, Regions Bank, a financial institution with branches in the U.S. South and Midwest, notified the Black nonprofit, African People’s Education and Defense Fund (APEDF), that the bank was “exiting” its 20-year relationship, closing accounts, withdrawing lines of credit and canceling mortgage loans. This comes on the heels of the FBI's raid in July of the African People's Socialist Party in Saint Louis, Missouri, as well as reported pending indictments against members of the party and its global network, the Uhuru Movement.
An estimated couple of thousand of people to "several thousand" marched on March 18 in downtown Washington D.C. The weekend marked the 20th anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq. The demonstration aimed to link the lack of funding for people's needs in the United States with the diversity of tactics the United States uses to perpetuate wars on people around the world.
