Panama Papers Goes Live with Searchable Database of Tax Evaders

More than 200,000 documents now available to the public as fallout from last month’s leak continues

The Panama Papers database went live on Monday, making more than 200,000 offshore account details available to search online at offshoreleaks.icij.org.

More than 11 million documents were leaked by a whistleblower last month to the German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung and the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ). The data, taken from the Panama-based law firm Mossack Fonseca, linked shell companies, foundations, and trusts to 72 former and current global heads of state. read more

Tom Butt elected mayor and slate of progressive candidates all win city council seats after grim battle with corporate power

A slew of progressive candidates were elected in Richmond, California on Tuesday night in a resounding defeat of corporate power, after a multi-million-dollar opposition campaign funded by Chevron brought national attention to the race but failed to take control of City Hall.

Local politician Tom Butt, a Democrat, was elected mayor with 51 percent of the vote, beating the Chevron-backed candidate, Nat Bates, by 16 points. Richmond Progressive Alliance representatives Eduardo Martinez, Jovanka Beckles, and outgoing  Mayor Gayle McLaughlin also won three of the four open seats on the City Council. read more

McDonald’s May Have Intimidated Employees Into Voting GOP

Ohio Democrats are calling for an investigation into the owner of 12 of the state’s McDonald’s restaurants, claiming he attempted to “intimidate” employees into voting for Republicans on election day, according to Raw Story. Employees received letters from owner Paul Siegfried with their paychecks urging them to vote for GOP candidates to ensure the safety of their own jobs. “If the right people are elected, we will be able to continue with raises and benefits at or above present levels. If others are elected, we will not,” the letter said, printed in the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Siegfried then listed the names of three GOP candidates for Senate, governor and House representative. read more
