The ‘Poorly Housed’ Rise Up in France

Though France's endless winter is finally thawing, for tens of thousands spring time marks the beginning of another cold spell: evictions and the wild goose chase for a new place to sleep. People waiting for years to get into public housing, those living in unsafe conditions, the homeless, and those crammed into dilapidated hotels make up the over three million people in France classified as mal-logés, or the 'poorly housed.' French housing laws prohibit evictions during the winter, thus for the mal-logés, the season's changing brings little relief.

Disarmament is the Key to Peaceful Coexistence in Europe

People in Europe, Russia and some in America are resting easier after the Kremlin's announcement, Wednesday, January 28 that they are withdrawing their threat against Poland and the United States. That threat was about placing their missiles on the northern border  of Poland in response to any further building of the U.S. Missile Defense System in Poland and the Czech Republic. Russia felt threatened by the placement of 10 Interceptor Missiles in Poland, only a few hundred miles from Russian territory to the East.

Unfinished Tasks for the President of Europe

On December 30, the last working day of the French Presidency of the 27-member European Union, the Foreign Ministers met in Paris to analyse the conflict in Gaza and to propose a cease-fire. President Nicolas Sarkozy is now on his way to the Middle East to talk with the officials of Egypt, the Palestinian Authority and Israel about such a cease-fire and follow-up negotiations.
