Unfortunately, the election of Bolsonaro in Brazil might only be the beginning for South America. We are possibly facing the dawn of a new regional political process that we do not yet understand in depth, and which actually might not be led primarily by the figure of Bolsonaro, but by the conservative ideals that nest in our societies.
Families of color are much likelier to be in precarious financial situations: 37 percent of Black families and 33 percent of Latino families have zero or negative wealth, compared with just 15.5 percent of White families.
The Trump administration is currently working to overthrow Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in the name of freedom and democracy. Yet Washington’s efforts will only lead to bloodshed and a worsening of the country’s crisis and polarization. Just take a look at who is leading the coup efforts from Washington.
If the Trump administration and its allies continue to pursue their reckless course in Venezuela, the most likely result will be bloodshed, chaos, and instability.
Amid crises in Venezuela, migration, and the climate, the Western Hemisphere’s chief regional organization has been hobbled by pro-Trump leadership.
The indigenous and African American communities know perfectly well that regardless of who is elected their situation will not change unless they themselves change. The only alternative they have is to strengthen their autonomy, their capacity to organize, and their capacity to make decisions. Naturally this process brings us beyond the immediate and what occurs in the electoral process. To me this is a very important question, because it places us in a situation where the political agenda is not being made by those in power, but rather the people.
